What is an Internship for College Students
An internship is signing up for a part-time or a full-time job with a company, Startup, or Organization, to gain valuable work experience.
The benefits of internships for students are numerous, one of the great benefits is that internships allow students to acquire skills that they may not learn in a regular classroom.
You’ll need an internship for a lot of reasons but don’t worry. I won’t spoil anything for you. You can read the benefits of an internship for students in detail down below.
Paid and unpaid internship
There are two types of internships, Paid, and Unpaid.
The majority of the internships come with unpaid work, but you can find paid ones also.
They usually pay low wages, but that can change. If you work passionately, there is a chance that that organization will offer you a proper contract.
Now with unpaid internships, there is a chance that you’ll get college credits, but that is not necessary. Also, they won’t let you do any of the serious work. Most of the time, it’s just a millennial job in a work-induced environment to gain experience.
10 Benefits of Internship for Students in India
Let’s start with some of the most valid and essential pros of an internship for students that can help you narrow your career options and potential and build a promising career.
1. Gain valuable work experience.
The first and foremost is, of course, gaining some valuable work experience. Let’s get our facts straight. We spend our precious time in an education that doesn’t prepare us for practical life, right?
In the whole 16 years of education, we usually have one goal. That is to clear an exam. It can either be a board or an entry test for a university.
The internship is the only thing that can help you out by introducing you to the practical part of life and believe me. Your eyes will open wide when you realize that it’s nothing that I have been preparing for. Now, chill out.
I won’t spoil the “Fun” part of this realization. But keep in mind that we have all been there, and it’ll help you gain a totally fresh perspective.
2. Explore a career path
Choosing a career path can be quite dramatic in brown households especially. Some people get by their ways easily. Others like us have to suffer many consequences to get into a field that we care about.
I find it a lot harder to fight for my career option if I don’t know anything about it yet.
That’s where an internship helps out. You’ll get familiar with all the aspects of the career you want to choose and then convince your parents of it. As far as convincing is concerned, constant nagging and emotional blackmail work great for many of us.
3. Give yourself an edge in the job market
An internship will give a fantastic plus point to your CV as well as your practical experience. You are more likely to get a job with a higher starting salary than a guy who didn’t have any intern experience. Because every recruiter knows that an intern spends enough time in an office, you gain quality work experience and work responsibly.
As far as a guy with no internship experience is concerned, he will have to learn a lot in an actual job, so usually, people don’t take that risk.
4. Develop and refine skills
Skill is the most basic requirement of every job. If you just finished your education and are looking for a job, but you don’t know where to start. I will recommend that the very first thing that you look into should be developing skills.
If I were you, I would start with communication skills and then move onto something more practical and valuable, for Example learning to be skillful with technology.

Now you’ll need a place to practice all of your skills and pick up new ones, and that’s where an internship can help you out.
One of my favorite benefits of an internship is that you get an assigned area to practice your social and developmental skills, which are really helpful in the long run.
5. Receive financial compensation
This part might not be true for the majority of the recruiters because most of the internships are usually either unpaid or they pay really low wages.
But still, there are a lot of internship opportunities that pay a handsome amount, which can help you out a lot in life. If you are a student and got an internship that pays well and good you might find it hard to concentrate on your studies while doing a job. Well, I have got you covered. Check out our blog about some great that’ll help you out studying after work.
6. Network with professionals in the field
As a student, we never get to interact with actual professionals unless they are family members of family friends, right? So that’s going to change a lot because you’ll get a chance to interact with professionals. Believe me. You’ll learn a lot of stuff from them.
You can ask them for professional advice, which can help you out in the long run.
I usually find their struggle experiences quite fascinating because they make me realize that I am not alone in this journey. Also, there is this golden advice which is one of the tremendous benefits of internships.
7. Gain confidence
Gaining confidence is another excellent benefit of an internship.
The reason we usually lose confidence is that we are not familiar with the environment etc but that will change as soon as you join as an intern. Here is how it works.
We usually use this same psychology while going for an interview.
Our teacher used to say to visit the office in which the interview is held a few times before the actual date. This way, you’ll get used to the environment and won’t feel choked up during an actual interview. Try to own the field beforehand.
When you join an office for an internship, you’ll start to consider yourself part of their team, and that will skyrocket your confidence. Not just for that specific team and office but for any other job you’ll apply for.
8. Practice your rules
The time when you are scrolling Instagram and you come across some quotes about how to do a good job or get organized or plan your schedule.
You think to yourself that when I get a job, I’ll follow these rules because right now, it’s of no use as I’m just a graduate with no job.
Well, an internship can change that. You’ll be able to apply your own work theory to your work life by getting organized, practicing the art of focus and commitment, working under pressure, and so much more.
I know these things sound crazy and scary, but believe me, there are easy ways to do them and that you can practice at an internship. This will have a good effect on your life.
9. Internship increase your motivation
Do you know what usually makes us lose our motivation towards our dreams? Wrong interaction group! Yup, that’s right, I said it.
Let’s see, you are a passionate painter and want to work for an art gallery or something, but you usually hang out with your friends who are in the field of content writing. There are a lot of chances that you slowly lose interest and motivation towards your actual talent. That’s where I find the right internship is very beneficial.
When you hang out with peers who have the same dreams and passion, your motivational energy will boost up. And I’m not just saying that I have wasted a reasonable time of my life with the wrong stuff.
Believe me when you are at the right place every day will feel like a good ending fairy tale. You will even get excited about the troubles that come with them.
10. Internships improve your CV
Let’s be honest for a second. Our CV sucks when we graduate, and in order to make them better, we must opt for internships to add additional skills, experience, and much more points that are required for a good CV.
I don’t know about you, but when I applied for the first job, I had zero experience in the professional world, and the only thing that I added to my skills was my hobbies.
I am sure that most of the recruiters would have had a good laugh at that but not anymore. As soon as I get my first job, My CVs bashed everyone else’s.
I gained so many skills and learned about some that I didn’t even know that they existed. They gave me more than ten good points on my Cv.
11. Getting a reference or letter of recommendation
Getting a reference letter or recommendation is what we go in for in an internship. No, wait. Actually, we apply to get hired permanently. Whatever your priority is for most of us, this is the second-best thing.
Internships usually last for a short period of time. If we invest 100% of our capabilities and leave a good reputation, we might get a shining recommendation letter or, even better, A good-paying Job.
Sorry I got carried away by the word good-paying job.
Any who, I would definitely enlist this point into my benefits of Internship category.
12. It’s a low-commitment way to test out a job and career path
If you are looking for excuses to sign up for an internship, then this point might get you what you want. It’s a playground to play by your rules without worrying about permanent damage to your reputation. You can learn a lot without getting worried about getting fired or getting the company in serious losses.
Usually, the interns are not allowed to handle the serious stuff, but you’ll get to meet people who do that, and believe me, you are going to learn a lot. Being an intern can be a fun ride.
The internship will also benefit you in choosing a career path for yourself without getting into a serious commitment with the company.
13. Internship Ensured learning
And you might have experienced in science classes no matter how much your teacher threw her knowledge at you. You won’t get the concept just right until you actually saw the procedure happen.
For Example, in physics, we were instructed on how the vernier caliper works and blah blah, but I never understood till
I actually held that damn thing in my hand and actually used it for measuring.
The same is the case with the work environment. No matter how much you study about corporate works, some things are to be felt and experienced, not just listened to.
Believe me. You’ll learn a lot about an office while actually working in it rather than hearing about it from a peer group.
14. Internship Increases chances of getting a Job Contract
Isn’t it great to even imagine applying for a temporary internship and after some time they are so impressed by your performance that they offer you a contract?
Studies show that having an internship experience leads to full-time job prospects and higher pay
- 70% of companies offer interns a full-time job.
- 80% of students accept such offers.
- As a result, 56% of interns get a full-time job from internships.
Internships can open the doors of tremendous possibilities like these and even more.
The bottom line
The bottom line to this blog is that an internship is an excellent opportunity for students looking forward to having a bright and shining future. So as a working professional,
I would recommend that you should get your hands on this, as soon as you get a chance. You might have to come out of your comfort zone but remember nothing grows in a comfort zone ever.
